Steve Biko was a South African freedom fighter. As a young attorney, he worked for the oppressed in South Africa as Gandhi also did. Like Gandhi, Biko was committed to non-violence and was murdered. Biko led the "Black is Beautiful" movement in South Africa to try to restore human dignity and pride in people who had suffered untold humiliations, poverty, and degradation under the apartheid regime. Because of his views and popularity, the Pretoria  government imprisoned Steve Biko and brutally murdered him in his cell. He was one of the many people martyred before the release of Nelson Mandela and the end of the apartheid rule in South Africa. Recommended: the biography of Steve Biko, simply titled Biko.
